Chapter 12: I Intend to Give Them a Grand Gift
After an exhausting day of grueling training, Mo Qianxun was being supported by Chen Min as they made their way to the canteen. Halfway there, they encountered an assistant who had been looking for her.
“Comrade Mo, finally found you,” the assistant said, staring at the frail Mo Qianxun for a moment. “What’s wrong? Feeling weak?”
“A bit,” Mo Qianxun replied. “Comrade Xu, you were looking for me?”
“Yes!” The assistant led Mo Qianxun under a large tree, handed her a file folder, and briefed her on the findings.
Mo Qianxun lowered her head, staring at the file in her hands, lost in thought. When the assistant finished speaking, she looked up again. “So you’re saying I’m not an orphan? There’s a good chance I actually have parents?”
The assistant noticed the change in her demeanor. “The likelihood is high, but a paternity test is needed to be sure.”
“Are you suggesting that An Xin has been obstructing my job search because she knows I am the true daughter of the An family, while she herself has long known she’s not their daughter?” Mo Qianxun asked.
The assistant nodded. “Based on the investigation, An Xin’s attitude towards Chen Chunyu and his wife is far more familial than An Junjie’s.”
Mo Qianxun let out a dry chuckle. “I understand. Let’s proceed as Zhao Jianguo advised. We’ll do the paternity test quietly first. If it confirms they’re my parents and they still choose to protect An Xin despite knowing her true identity and actions, then there’s no need to reveal the test results. I don’t want parents who can’t tell right from wrong.” Her expression was cold.
After all these years, she had managed well on her own. She was long past the age to crave familial affection. If acknowledging these parents only meant trouble in her life, why invite it?
Assistant Xu looked at Mo Qianxun’s resolute attitude and suddenly understood Zhao Jianguo’s intentions. This young woman was rational and clear about what she wanted from life.
After having a meal in the canteen with Chen Min, Mo Qianxun returned to her dormitory. Holding the report, she couldn’t help but feel a ripple of emotion. Yet, the thought that the An couple might be shielding An Xin stung her heart with a bitter ache.
Meanwhile, in the An family’s villa, An Junjie and his wife sat in their bedroom, both looking grim as they examined the paternity report.
“An Xin is actually Chen Chunyu’s child. Then where is our child?” Mrs. An’s eyes were red as she looked at the report. “Their child is with us, but where is our child?”
An Junjie pulled his wife into his arms. “Knowing Chen Chunyu’s character, she definitely won’t raise our daughter well. I’ll send someone to investigate. We will find her.”
“Darling, what do you think Xin’er will do if she finds out her true identity?” Mrs. An wiped away tears in his embrace.
An Junjie sneered. “What do you think? She probably already knows. Haven’t you noticed that An Xin’s attitude towards them is much more like family than towards us?”
Mrs. An thought about how An Xin behaved when Chen Chunyu visited their home and her tears ceased. She looked up at her husband. “You mean An Xin has known her identity all along but never told us?”
“Why else would Chen Chunyu swap An Xin to our family? Why was Yu’er’s leg crippled? Why is Xinghui unwilling to come home?” An Junjie’s face darkened. “It’s clearly about our family assets.”
Mrs. An lowered her head; a cold glint flashed in her eyes. “I understand. We must not let An Xin know we’ve found out. I’m going to send them a big surprise.”
An Junjie smiled with satisfaction at his wife’s reaction. He admired her rationality and decisiveness.
Unaware that her true identity had been discovered by the An couple, An Xin sat in a bar surrounded by her circle of friends, all wealthy second-generation heirs.
“Xin Xin, you wouldn’t believe it. That woman you mentioned actually came to my company for an interview. I saw it myself and had her kicked out immediately,” a girl in a red dress laughed as she drank.
An Xin smiled contentedly. “Good. She’s just a poor orphan and shouldn’t be living in Jing City. Sooner or later, I’ll have Mo Qianxun kicked out. Then my parents won’t meet her, and I’ll remain the An family’s daughter forever.”
She had long known she wasn’t An Junjie’s biological daughter but Chen Chunhua’s. Yet what did it matter? Now she was his daughter and would always be. Everything in the An family belonged to her. Some mistakes, once made, need not be corrected.
“But I heard she found a job delivering food,” another girl said.
An Xin smirked wickedly. “No matter. Soon, she won’t have a job anymore. I don’t believe any company would risk going against the An Group for a delivery girl.”
The others exchanged looks, a dark gleam in their eyes.
The next day, Chen Min dragged Mo Qianxun out of bed. After a morning run and breakfast, her first delivery order came! But this time, the pickup location was different.
Mo Qianxun checked the merchant’s address on her phone, then glanced at the canteen in front of her.
“Agent 008, are you sure the merchant’s location is correct?” she asked.
[Of course. Zhao Jianguo arranged this specially. For now, use the military canteen. Once the base is completed, we’ll build a gourmet city inside it!] 008’s thoughts turned to Zhao Jianguo’s vision of the future, and the prospects seemed bright.
“What about the merchant’s payment?”
[Oh, I’ve already transferred it to the reserved WeChat account. This way is actually better — I don’t have to waste energy erasing the boss’s memory. Otherwise, the delivery address being Qingqiu would look suspicious.]
Mo Qianxun suddenly understood. “Ah, no wonder the boss didn’t react when he saw the delivery address. You blurred his memory!”
[What else? Memory erasure requires energy too, or else I wouldn’t have activated so late!] Thinking about it made her angry. Damn snake, just you wait.
Mo Qianxun went to the window where the head cook had already packed the roast chicken.
“This roast chicken is original flavor. I thought they might get tired of it, so I prepared extra dipping sauces,” the head cook said with a smile.
These cooks were specially chosen to prepare food for delivery. They knew a little about Mo Qianxun’s system binding.
“Thank you, Chief Wang. I hadn’t even thought of that,” Mo Qianxun said cheerfully, carrying the delivery.
