If two guys go to a haunted house together, there won’t be any bad intent at all—everyone’s too timid for that.
With girls, though, it’s different. They all want to turn the fear up a notch.
The perfect move is to scare a girl so badly that she pees herself, so you can step in like a hero and become the strongest shield they can cling to.
Cheng Yao admitted his mind was a bit twisted, but it felt like that was exactly what most people think.

For dinner, the three had a round of Chengdu-style skewer hotpot. It was so spicy it burned, the aroma clinging to your lips afterward.
Cheng Yao liked food like that; it made everything taste better.
Wang Churuo and Liu Hanyue couldn’t wait. They grabbed bubble tea and walked straight to the haunted house.
Now, after dinner, they were obviously doing this to punish themselves.

At the entrance, Cheng Yao saw a decent crowd. Staff were still handing out flyers.
Most of the groups were two or three people, or one guy with his girlfriend.
With Cheng flanked by a girl on each side, everyone who saw them first looked at him with envy and fascination—especially since Liu Hanyue stood out so brightly, even in a crowd, her presence unmistakable.
Wang Churuo looked a little dimmer than before, but she was still a lovely little beauty.
Cheng, handsome on his own, became the center of attention the instant the two girls walked with him.

After waiting a while, their turn came.
Wang Churuo asked meekly, “Excuse me, is it really scary?”
The haunted-house attendant smiled with friendly confidence. “Really, it’s not scary at all.”
Cheng gave him a look: I’ll believe you when I see it.
No doubt those people had a special kind of twisted taste, and maybe the same was true for anyone here playing a ghost; they probably all had the same kind of mentality.
He could almost imagine how delighted they’d be by girls screaming in panic—prettier girls probably felt like better trophies.

The worker, holding the passes, glanced at Wang and Liu with a mix of envy and disbelief. In this country, with so many single men around, and you bring two girls at once? No room to breathe, right?
He also looked at Cheng’s thick biceps and broad shoulders, tall and built like an athlete, and added with a warning anyway:
“Good-looking guy, once you’re inside, no matter what happens, do not hit any staff. Fine is one hundred to five hundred yuan. Also, if you have high blood pressure or heart trouble, say so now—you can’t play.”

Cheng nodded slightly.
“Not a problem.
No problem at all.”
Wang, with her little bag on her back, looked frightened like a little rabbit.
Liu huffed, all proud and cool, pretending she wasn’t scared at all.
The contrast between the two girls was complete.

Inside, there was only one flashlight and the mission token. Once they entered, the lights went completely dark; only that one beam did the guiding.

Liu had been all proud at first; then Wang’s face went white.
“I’m scared, Cheng Yao…”
“Don’t be.”

Wang couldn’t help hugging his arm. Cheng took a breath and patted her shoulder.
“It’s okay.”
“See? This is what scares people up close. Anyone talks big before they’re actually here.”
Liu gave a cold snort. Her big, sharp eyes were still busy scanning every corner in panic anyway.

Wang said in a wavering voice, “It’s different, right? I didn’t feel scared before a roller coaster, but once we got on, I did.”
“Coward.”
“Like you’re not scared either! Come on, use the other arm.”
Cheng offered his elbow toward Liu’s side.
Liu dismissed him with contempt and kept walking off on her own.

Not long after, Cheng hit a snag.

Wang snapped at Liu. “You said you weren’t afraid. Go open that door. Cheng Yao and I’ll go to the other side.”
“Don’t. Not being scared doesn’t mean I must do what you say!”
Liu planted her hands on her hips, like she might tear Wang apart next.

At that moment a couple came over.
“Bro, you guys doing the mission too?”
Seeing Cheng with two girls, the boy suddenly decided his own girlfriend wasn’t that appealing.
“Yeah,” Cheng said with a smile. “Wanna team up?”
“Sure.”
The boy, sounding experienced, looked at Wang. “You join us. You two over there look braver—split up and make it even.”

“Fine then. Go ahead.”
Liu stepped right back over beside Cheng.

Wang watched him get taken away with longing and reluctantly let go of his sleeve.
Once they were split, the oppressive atmosphere made everyone look after themselves.
Even without real ghosts, you could scare yourself halfway to dying.
“Ahhh… a ghost!”
“Ahhh…”
“Run!”

The shrieks came fast. Liu shuddered and pulled her chin in close, eyes filled with raw fear.
“Looks like they’re over there,” she said.
“Mm.”

Cheng felt a little let down.
The earlier couple had already run off. Wang leaned against a wall with a sigh. “So weak…”
Two meters away, right at the wall corner, a ghost’s head appeared and stared at her.

In truth, the ghost itself seemed confused. This was a girl who had looked like a little frightened rabbit before—how had she dared to step right up to it?
“Come here… come on over… come closer,” Wang called quietly.
When she stamped her foot, the ghost seemed to back off a little.
“Is there… is there something you need?” it asked, as if this was a place where not-so-clean spirits gathered.

“Here.”
Wang dug a few hundred yuan from her bag and slipped it into the ghost’s hand, with a sly expression.
“Go scare the two girls on that side, especially the pretty one with double ponytails. She’s got the weakest nerve…”

“That’s not right, boss!”
The ghost was stunned by the absurd request.
“Take your friend too. I’ll give him five hundred as well.”
“Don’t. Give me five hundred more, and I’ll bring my partner myself.”
That was all it took.
In the blink of an eye he’d made a thousand yuan; he grinned, then decided to use all his strength to terrify exactly whom Wang described.
Two girls going after one boy? They must have some serious rivalry, he thought. Ruthless.
People always say close girlfriends are perfect tools for tormenting each other—he hadn’t believed it before, but now there was no doubt.
And a real scene like two girls fighting over one guy? It was his first time seeing that in real life, and somehow he was the actor in it.
The ghost’s imagination sparked into a hundred versions at once.

“Fine!”
Wang had pulled out that old law—money moves even the dead. It worked instantly.
With Wang’s bribe, the ghost and his partner took the quick route and rushed toward Cheng Yao and Liu Hanyue.
Wang then lazily began her task, unhurried and calm.

“Cheng Yao, this is where I can only help you, little madam!”

On the other side, Cheng and Liu finally reached the chamber.

Liu read out the task: “You have to lie on the bed, close your eyes for ten seconds, then open them.”
“Your turn?”
“No. Yours!”
“Alright,” Liu said with a shake of her head. “You do it.”
Cheng shrugged. He was plainly not afraid of this. “Fine.”

He dropped onto the bed without ceremony. The next moment, something moved beside him and a faceless white figure rose up on the wall.
“Ahhh—!”
Liu screamed and tried to run, clutching Cheng’s hand.
Cheng, too, was startled; when he stepped out only then, a white figure had stood up and lunged from the wall.

The actors were putting in real effort, he thought. Not easy to hold on and leap that way.
Liu was frozen. A second ago she was fine; now it all popped out at once.
Cheng hardly felt anything himself—when it came to force, his own presence was enough.
No rumor, no forwarding.
Adrenaline seemed to hit her like a spike; she forgot image and pride, grabbed his arm, and shook with fear.
Cheng nearly burst out laughing. Who had said she was fearless?

In the end, this is what all that fear gets you, is it!?
He wondered where Wang was and why there was no movement.
Had she fainted?

“The door’s open. There’s a passage. We go that way.”
“Mm… okay.”

At the iron door, Liu looked around left and right and exhaled in relief.
But the instant she crossed, a figure came dangling down from above.
“Ahhh—!”
Her eyes rolled back, and she nearly fell backward. Her small body trembled, her face suddenly blazing red.
In the darkness, it was hard to tell much of anything.

Then it clicked—the look on her face, the shaking hands.
Her underwear felt damp on one side.
For a moment she was in such humiliation that she wondered how to get out and somehow change, but if she did it with Cheng she’d be found out.

Cheng too was shocked. The actor had set a clever blind spot on the door frame.
He pulled Liu along and ran.
After a bit, she said, face burning, “Cheng Yao, I need to use the restroom.”
“Didn’t you, uh… pee from fear?”
Liu stiffened for a second. “How could I? I just drank too much soda…”
“Okay then.”

Luckily, no one was chasing them. Cheng managed to drag her out.
Once they reached daylight, he saw it plainly: the front of her underwear was damp at one edge.
Liu pretended nothing was wrong, but her face still stayed red.
“Some water was on the table in there, I don’t know who spilled it. So annoying…”
“Mm.”
Cheng looked at that damp spot and nearly said something, then stopped.
He had stayed with Liu the whole time and hadn’t seen any water.
He couldn’t believe she had actually panicked that badly.

“I’ll wait here for Wang Churuo. You go on.”
He didn’t have the low-mindedness to tease her in this moment.
When Liu saw his expression, she realized his reason sounded awkward and felt a social death rising to her face all at once.
She went in, muttering curses at the ghost through the generations, and kept her head down into the mall.

A short while later, Wang Churuo came out and asked when she saw Cheng: “Where’s Hanyue?”
“She went to the toilet.”
“Heh… she couldn’t have peed from fear, could she? I’m so timid and still got through it.”
Wang squinted at Cheng. “Any ghosts on your side?”
“Yeah. They chased those two, so I slipped out.”

Cheng didn’t push it. The three waited at a tea shop for twenty minutes. Half the drinks were gone; Wang frowned.
“How long is she taking?”
“She’s coming.”

Liu finally emerged. She hadn’t changed, but there were no marks left, and it was obvious she’d fixed it.
Wang rushed over and hugged her.
“It nearly killed me, but it was so thrilling. What do you think, Hanyue?”
“Hm.”
“Let’s come again next time.”
“…”
