Chapter 59: I'm Terrified—Your Girlfriend Is So Scary
The music teacher’s eyes burned with intensity. As a music teacher, she could keenly appreciate just how masterful and skilled Cheng Yao’s technique was.
Wang Yuting was somewhat stunned—was his performance technique also flawless? Was that a perfect score? She knew that, so far, no one in the competition had scored above seventy-five. Wasn’t this a bit too much?
The mermaid was beautiful but fleeting,
She sacrificed for love,
No matter if you love me or not,
As long as you’re by my side.
Even after Cheng Yao left the stage, the melody lingered in everyone’s hearts—it was truly delightful. The music teacher couldn’t help saying, “He really shouldn’t be at the University of Finance.”
“Xiao He, you’ve got it wrong. Our university is a place of talented people—what’s wrong with producing a few prodigies?”
“Mmm…”
Where’s your sense of shame?
It’s only been a few days since the school year started!
In the audience, Zhang Ya had already rushed outside, and Rong Xuelin and the others quickly followed. Lu Mengyao finally breathed a sigh of relief, terrified Zhang Ya would notice her. She then found an excuse to use the restroom and hurriedly sent a message to Cheng Yao.
She’d lost her appetite—she just wanted to return to her own campus to calm down. It all happened so suddenly, it scared her out of her wits. Whether or not Zhang Ya found out was beside the point—her conscience was uneasy, like a thief caught by the police, her mind had gone completely blank.
…
[Congratulations, your cultivated girlfriend ‘Lu Mengyao’ has raised her affection for you to 100. You may now draw one skill in life or a specific field from her.]
[Congratulations, your cultivated girlfriend ‘Zhang Ya’ has raised her affection for you to 90…]
Leaving the backstage area, just as Cheng Yao was about to step outside, he paused.
What was going on?
He was dumbfounded—was it possible for affection to reach 100? He checked the stats and found that the affection score was indeed 100. However, the very next second, it began dropping rapidly, returning to ninety.
So, for a brief moment just now, Lu Mengyao had the urge to throw herself at him with reckless abandon?
Was he truly that dazzling on stage?
What puzzled him even more was—what did this have to do with Zhang Ya? Wasn’t she supposed to be at the Shanghai Conservatory? This was as absurd as someone getting pregnant just by staring at a screen!
Before he could leave, Lu Mengyao bombarded him with messages.
Lu Mengyao: (╥﹏╥) Your girlfriend is here, I was scared to death! She’s really frightening—she was standing so close to me just now. I’m going back now, bye!
Cheng Yao: …
So Zhang Ya had come to watch the competition—no wonder her affection score jumped past ninety. He’d thought he’d seen a ghost.
No sooner had he finished replying than his phone rang—an incoming call from Zhang Ya.
“Cheng Yao, I’m waiting for you at the entrance. Come out now! How dare you mess with me—let’s see how I deal with you!”
…
After hanging up, Cheng Yao deleted their chat history and hurried outside.
Sure enough, outside the gymnasium stood four graceful figures, with several boys approaching them for their contact details.
Cheng Linlin laughed and asked, “Hey handsome, which one of us are you after?”
“Beautiful lady, may I add you on WeChat?” The most attractive boy glanced at Zhang Ya with a smile at the corner of his eyes.
Zhang Ya ignored him completely, instead marching over to the entrance with determination. Suddenly, she pounced, caught Cheng Yao, and kissed him.
The scene left the nearby onlookers dumbstruck. But with the dim lighting and distance, they couldn't see faces clearly.
Cheng Yao hadn’t expected Zhang Ya’s sudden attack. In public? How improper! If they wanted to be intimate, they could do so back home—he’d even wash up and deliver himself to her bed.
“So this is your punishment? Then don’t hold back, I’m ready!”
“Show off, why don’t you!” Zhang Ya shot him a coquettish glare, her hand giving his chest a light pat—she couldn't bring herself to hit harder.
Cheng Yao’s smile was impossible to hide. He asked, “You’re not going back tonight, are you?”
“No, it’s too tiring to return now. We’ll stay at your place—there are enough spare rooms, right?”
“No problem. Let’s go, I’ll take you all to eat something delicious.”
“Alright!” Zhang Ya’s smile was radiant as she followed him, her hands clasped behind her back, long white legs striding confidently. She beckoned to Rong Xuelin and the others.
The girls said goodbye to the boys from the University of Finance and caught up. In reality, they had little interest in those boys and weren’t looking for romance at all.
Cheng Yao couldn’t help but ask, “Why did you all come here so suddenly?”
“To catch you in the act!” Cheng Linlin replied fiercely.
“To check up on you!” Li Yingshan added with a teasing smile.
“I missed you so much I couldn’t sleep. We decided to come cheer you on and ended up running all this way like crazy women. If you’re so talented musically, why didn’t you go to the Conservatory?” Rong Xuelin asked, puzzled.
Zhang Ya also looked at Cheng Yao, waiting for his answer.
Helpless, Cheng Yao said, “My sister’s here. I wanted to keep an eye on her.”
“That’s good,” Zhang Ya nodded softly, clearly pleased.
Zhang Ya suddenly realized how hard long-distance love truly was. She missed him; his image filled her thoughts. She wanted to rush over and see him immediately—she simply couldn’t suppress the feeling. Holding him brought her a sense of peace like nothing else.
No wonder people say long-distance relationships are difficult—now she understood. And this was only the distance between Jinling and Shanghai. For those truly in love, but separated by even greater distances, how agonizing must it be?
Whoever claimed there was no distance between hearts—what a fool, peddling such poisonous chicken soup!
At the foot of the dormitory building, Cheng Yao said, “Wait for me a moment, I’ll return something.”
“Hurry up.”
“I’ll be right back.”
Cheng Yao found a girl downstairs and asked her to help return something—he couldn’t go up to the girls’ dorm, and the dorm manager wouldn’t allow it.
Having returned the guitar, Cheng Yao took Zhang Ya’s hand.
Zhang Ya let him, and turned back with a laugh. “If you’re jealous, then find someone for yourself.”
Rong Xuelin, Cheng Linlin, and Li Yingshan all looked exasperated.
Not only had they followed her all the way to Jinling, but she insisted on shoving their faces full of public displays of affection. Have mercy and act human!
Still, this was the first time they’d seen this clingy side of Zhang Ya. Normally, she was always the strong-willed one.
“I want crayfish—and you have to peel them for me. And spicy crab, too.”
“Of course!” Cheng Yao agreed readily. “I’ll take you to a place way better than the ones in Shanghai.”
So, the group hopped on the subway to Golden Eagle.
On the train, Zhang Ya asked curiously, “Who taught you to sing like that?”
“I was born with it—can’t help it!” Cheng Yao grinned.
Rong Xuelin, sitting next to him, said, “I’m a music major at the Conservatory, you can’t fool me…”
He was doomed—the group was full of the real deal.
Cheng Yao could only put on his best act. “Actually, I was planning to go to the Conservatory with you, so I picked up a few things. Didn’t expect to have such a knack for it…”
“Mmm…” Zhang Ya blinked. “I understand.”
“Your eyes are so beautiful—did an angel kiss them?” Cheng Yao held her hand.
“Ugh, I could puke…”
“Could you two please act normal?”
Cheng Yao glanced at Rong Xuelin. “Why don’t you give me a critique, Rong Xuelin?”
“I can’t really say, but you definitely sing better than I can,” Rong Xuelin admitted. She couldn’t deny it; she simply couldn’t reach his level. Yet, she felt a bit weird about it all, unsure what else to say.
…
