Chapter 23: What is your monthly salary?

Uncle Ben spoke kindly, “Look, you saved the eldest granddaughter of our establishment. Such a favor from us at Dongsheng must be repaid. Don’t you agree?”
Liu Haizhu had been sneaking glances at the young lady beside him, ignoring the old man at the top glaring at him as if he couldn’t see.
But upon hearing those words, his eyes lit up, excitement stirring within him. He immediately said, “Are you all this polite around here? Haha.”
Uncle Ben smiled warmly, watching the boy’s expression, and said, “Repayment... repayment can take many forms: for example, a reputation in the martial world, properties, shops...”
Seeing the boy unmoved, Uncle Ben cautiously asked, “Uh... or maybe, money?”
With a trembling heart and shaking hands, the boy suddenly lost control and didn’t even hold the young lady’s hand anymore, blurting out, “Money, money sounds good!”
Hearing this, Uncle Ben was momentarily stunned. Did this kid really not know the going rates out there?
For example, how much does a hall master make in a day?
Moreover, real estate and shops in this port city are appreciating—anyone with eyes knows that’s true wealth!
Is this how the accounts are calculated?
However, having met countless people in his lifetime, Uncle Ben felt assured looking at this cheerful, somewhat money-minded young man.
This one is trustworthy!
Having followed Luo Bingrun for decades, rising from a humble paper fan holder to a second-tier marshal, he could tell at a glance that the establishment truly liked this young man from the bottom of their hearts.
Just like that old scoundrel Cao’s love for Guan Erge, they absolutely wanted to keep him!
Even the glaring and slamming on the table were just acts, all waiting for their chance to step into the spotlight.
Well, good. Having a request makes things easier.
Uncle Ben smiled and winked, tentatively holding up a finger to Liu Haizhu.
Liu Haizhu was immediately dazzled and jumped up, “Ten thousand? Deal!”
Uncle Ben’s eyes nearly popped out, almost smashing the teacup in his hand!
Damn it!!! The life of Dongsheng’s eldest young lady is worth only ten thousand bucks in this kid’s eyes???
But the old fox was clever.
He smiled cheerfully and exchanged a glance with Zhiwei beside him.
Zhiwei was also stunned but quickly recovered. Smiling, he pulled out a thick bundle of orange Hong Kong dollars from his pocket and handed over ten thousand.
“Here you go, ten thousand.”
Looking at the ten crisp thousand-dollar bills, Liu Haizhu was overjoyed. This money was damn easy to earn!

“Cough, cough,” Uncle Ben pressed his advantage and asked, “Brother Zhu, can I ask you something?”
“Yeah, Uncle, go ahead.”
This kid was all smiles, as long as there was money, he didn’t care about anything else.
Uncle Ben smiled and asked, “You work at the Land Affairs Office, or rather, the land management office, right? How much do you make a month?”
“Not much, not much.”
Liu Haizhu, ignoring the disdainful looks of others, seriously stuffed the money into his pocket and responded with a bit of pride, “Our unit is a government organization, you know. With salary and subsidies, it’s over five hundred a month.”
“Oh???"
Uncle Ben’s eyes flickered. “So how about this? Your skills are good, but you only make that little a month. I think that’s unreasonable and a waste of talent.
You see, this place isn’t peaceful, and Miss Ying Si isn’t safe alone.
So, we want to hire you as her personal bodyguard. What do you think?”
“I, I’m a government employee...” Liu Haizhu glanced again at the delicate face beside him.
This little fairy was truly quiet. Though a bit mischievous, the more playful she was, the more he liked her.
“Cough, cough,” Uncle Ben cleared his throat to interrupt. If he didn’t, the boy’s eyes would be glued to Xiaoying’s face.
“Yeah,” Liu Haizhu came back to his senses, “Well, I am a government employee, protecting Ying...”
“Luo Yingsi!” Ding Zhiwei reminded him impatiently.
“Right, guarding Yingsi is fine, but if I don’t go back, I’ll lose my iron rice bowl.”
“Twenty thousand a month!”
Seeing his eldest granddaughter being nudged by that brat, Luo Bingrun spoke annoyedly.
Originally, he thought that Uncle Ben’s hint of ten thousand a month would settle this kid.
But... damn, this was too humiliating, and Luo Bingrun couldn’t bring himself to say it.
When he finally said the price, his face flushed.
“Deal!”
Liu Haizhu readily agreed.
He smiled so hard his eyes disappeared. Turning to look at Luo Yingsi, this little fairy was truly both reserved and charming.
After leaving, it was just the two of them.
Luo Yingsi led the way, with Liu Haizhu following behind.
As they walked, the boy suddenly asked, “Little sister, where are you taking me?”
Luo Yingsi stopped. “Aren’t you my bodyguard? Come home with me.”

Liu Haizhu grinned widely, “Sure, going home sounds great.”
Seeing Liu Haizhu’s pig-like grin, Luo Yingsi wasn’t the least bit upset; instead, she felt a secret delight.
Just outside the teahouse.
“Damn it, hey, wait up!”
The booming voice caused a wave of unease, and Luo Yingsi instantly frowned elegantly.
Liu Haizhu turned to look.
It really was him... why hadn’t he left yet?
Agang came stomping over with a scowl, “Where are you off to?”
Liu Haizhu laughed, pointing to Luo Yingsi beside him, “Isn’t it obvious? Going home.”
Agang stared wide-eyed at the young lady, then at Liu Haizhu, shocked, “Damn, you two actually suit each other.”
Liu Haizhu pursed his lips, unusually not snapping back, and asked confusedly, “Hey, what are you up to?”
Agang’s eyes bulged, “Wanna have a drink?”
Liu Haizhu was stunned, “You’re from back home too?”
“Used to starve back then, I snuck in illegally, so what!” Agang’s eyes bulged. “I wanna drink with you, you got a problem?”
“Heh,” Liu Haizhu squinted, “If I don’t knock you out tonight, you don’t know how many eyes the Lord of Ma has!”
“You kidding me?” Agang glared, then called to his side, “Dasong, bring the car over.”
“Got it!”
One-armed Song replied gloomily and headed off.
“Crack!”
Liu Haizhu twisted his neck and glanced sideways, “What was that move when you bumped into me just now? What technique is that?”
Agang grinned proudly, “Heh, that’s my self-created giant horn!”
Liu Haizhu was stunned on the spot, “Holy crap, Saint Seiya???”
By the roadside,
One-armed Song watched them get into the car, shrugged, and left alone.
He felt that ever since meeting this Liu Haizhu, things had gone terribly wrong.
Was he a jinx???
Not only did he get beaten up for nothing, but the brand-new business car he just bought, barely used, was also wrecked.
As for asking Big Brother Agang for reimbursement...
That was just laughable...
Thinking this, walking along, One-armed Song suddenly felt tired.
Looking up, he saw a shining sign ahead: “Cai Ye Ting.”
