Chapter 69 – Lingzi, You Are Truly Important
“Default?” Cheng Yishu repeated the two words, still as confused as ever, finally giving up and asking, “Can you speak plainly?”
Da Lingzi looked at Cheng Yishu in surprise, judging that he wasn’t pretending to be clueless, so she simply sat down and said, “Kai called me and told me to check on you. He said he talked to you at noon about Miss An An’s scandal… and told me to try and persuade you!”
Cheng Yishu suddenly remembered there was indeed such a thing, and his mind, which had just relaxed, felt blocked again. He waved his hands saying, “Stop… Chen Kai really is desperate, isn’t he? Letting you, an assistant, come to persuade me—only he could think of that!”
“What’s wrong with being an assistant?” Da Lingzi rolled her eyes, displeased. “Assistants can solve fundamental problems at crucial moments, you know…”
“Fine, fine, then go solve the fundamental problem,” Cheng Yishu hummed, closing his eyes, not wanting to say more.
“Solve what?” Da Lingzi was baffled—was she being put to use now?
“Cooking!” Cheng Yishu looked at her helplessly. “Didn’t you come here to cook for me? That’s already solving a huge problem for me!”
“Oh…” Da Lingzi stood up, still a little dazed, scratching the back of her head.
“By the way, Cheng, your phone got a few messages… I accidentally took your phone home at noon!” Da Lingzi pulled the phone from her pocket and handed it to Cheng Yishu, who realized he hadn’t touched his phone in quite a while.
He took it quickly and waved Da Lingzi off to indicate she should get to her work.
Da Lingzi pouted and turned into the kitchen.
“Da Lingzi, uh… did you see anyone crouching downstairs when you came in?” Cheng Yishu’s voice came from the living room, loud enough to make Da Lingzi’s eardrums tremble, as if he was afraid she wouldn’t hear.
“Yes!” Da Lingzi answered, as if Cheng Yishu was stating the obvious, sighed, and continued, “Everyone’s after news about you and An An, both openly and secretly. How could downstairs ever be clean?”
Cheng Yishu was silent for a moment, and Da Lingzi kept washing the vegetables, unconcerned.
“Da Lingzi… by the way, your dress looks quite nice today!”
Da Lingzi shivered, lifting her head to see Cheng Yishu’s strange, smiling face.
“Wh-what is it?” Da Lingzi widened her eyes, suspiciously putting down the not-yet-clean tomato, and looked herself over from top to bottom…
Nothing seemed wrong.
Because of her figure, Da Lingzi rarely wore dresses. But with the heat these days, she’d broken her habit and put on a black chiffon dress.
Nothing seemed especially odd.
“Does it look bad?” Da Lingzi looked up again, puzzled, meeting Cheng Yishu’s gaze.
The next moment, Cheng Yishu’s chilling smile made the hairs on Da Lingzi’s head stand on end…
When Lin Xiaowen opened the door, she saw a tall woman, dressed in a black chiffon dress, with yellow, wavy, shoulder-length hair, and wearing a white disposable medical mask.
For a moment, she thought the person had knocked on the wrong door, so she politely asked, “Who are you looking for?”
The woman coughed lightly, didn’t respond, simply looked at her quietly without speaking.
Lin Xiaowen hesitated, her eyes filling with caution, unconsciously stepping back and grabbing the door handle to close it.
“Brother Yishu…”
Little Ranran, who was playing with blocks in the living room, heard her mother talking to someone at the door and came over out of curiosity, only to find her mother and Brother Yishu both standing there strangely, neither speaking nor coming inside…
In the moment Lin Xiaowen was distracted, Ranran dashed out and threw herself onto the “strange woman,” while Cheng Yishu finally broke into laughter.
“I went to all this trouble with my disguise, how did you recognize me, you little rascal?”
Cheng Yishu picked Ranran up and walked past Lin Xiaowen straight into the house, and Lin Xiaowen finally saw who was following behind Cheng Yishu… Da Lingzi!
Stunned—speechless!
Both Da Lingzi and Lin Xiaowen were utterly shocked.
The next moment, Cheng Yishu, sounding like the host, called out, “Why are you still standing outside? Come in!”
The two exchanged awkward smiles, still confused, and entered the house together.
The first meeting was a little awkward, except for Ranran, who was sitting on Cheng Yishu’s lap, studying the wig on his head…
“This is my girlfriend, Lin Xiaowen. This adorable little one is Ranran…”
“Xiaowen… Da Lingzi is my assistant…”
After the brief introductions, Lin Xiaowen smiled and nodded to the now petrified Da Lingzi. “Hello, just call me Xiaowen!”
“You… hello… No, hello, Sister-in-law!” Da Lingzi felt oxygen-deprived, gasping inwardly.
All those times she had “aided and abetted” Cheng Yishu, helping him rent cars, cover for him… it turned out he had someone outside…
No, he was secretly dating someone, and had a child, too…
Da Lingzi looked at the sweet, smiling Ranran, wanting to smile herself, but her expression looked worse than crying.
What now? Having discovered such a huge secret, would she be silenced?
Or if Kai found out, would she be considered an accomplice? Oh no, oh no…
While Da Lingzi’s mind was racing, Cheng Yishu interrupted her wild imaginings.
“What’s with your face? Your smile is uglier than crying… I brought you here today to lay things on the table. Weren’t you always asking where I disappeared to? Now you know… I’m dating Xiaowen, so…”
“No, no, no…” Da Lingzi awkwardly cut off Cheng Yishu’s formal explanation.
“Boss, you’re my employer, you really don’t have to tell me. I’ll just pretend I don’t know—tonight I saw nothing, heard nothing…”
Da Lingzi exaggerated her retreat toward the door, nearly running into the shoe cabinet.
“Stop right there!” Cheng Yishu sighed, put Ranran down, and said, “Ranran, be good—let big brother teach that strange aunt a lesson, then I’ll play with you.”
Lin Xiaowen was completely confused, but didn’t interrupt, simply watching quietly to see what the two would do.
Cheng Yishu snatched the wig off his head and tossed it to Da Lingzi, who clumsily caught it, still looking miserable.
Cheng Yishu finally said, “Do you know why I brought you here? You’re my personal assistant, my most loyal and important friend… So I feel that something as big as me falling in love shouldn’t be kept from you. It wouldn’t be right.”
Cheng Yishu spoke with righteous conviction, as if Da Lingzi was the kind of close friend who shared everything with him, while Da Lingzi’s face had long since wrinkled like a bitter melon, muttering weakly, “Boss… you really don’t have to be so considerate. I’m not that important… If Kai finds out, he’ll kill me… sob…”
