Chapter 39: You Truly Are Senior Brother and Junior Sister After All

Jun Wen and Feng Xi first went to report to Hall Master Luo of the Scripture Transmission Hall, then made their way to the Scripture Transmission Square.
Although they had arrived fairly early, quite a number of inner disciples were already waiting for class to begin.
When they saw Feng Xi and Jun Wen, they all stood and greeted them.
Jun Wen was accustomed to doing things his own way, so at most he merely nodded in acknowledgment.
Feng Xi, however, was different. Smiling brightly, she greeted everyone and chatted with them, entirely without airs.
Feng Xi had already become quite famous throughout the Profound Heaven Sect recently, and this only won her the favor of even more inner disciples.
By the time Elder Duanmu, who was in charge of teaching today, arrived, Feng Xi had already grown familiar with more than half the people present.
That was right—she had done it that quickly!
Jun Wen was completely dumbfounded.
Although he did not think befriending these inner disciples would be of any use, he had to admit that his junior sister’s social skills were truly extraordinary!
Then again, if she had not possessed such ability, she would never have persuaded Xing Wu and the others to cooperate with her.
Jun Wen lowered his voice and said to Feng Xi, “Junior Sister, Elder Duanmu is notorious for being an old stick-in-the-mud. He dislikes lively, outgoing disciples like us more than anything, so you must be careful!”
He was still rambling when Elder Duanmu suddenly barked, “Jun Wen, go stand in the corner!”
Jun Wen: “…”
He had forgotten that Elder Duanmu’s hearing was exceptionally sharp.
With drooping head, he could only walk over to the northeastern corner and stand there in punishment.
Elder Duanmu glanced at Feng Xi. He actually rather liked her; after all, she had cultivated an impeccable image.
Still, Elder Duanmu had always felt that Feng Xi’s personality was a little too unruly. Since the Sect Master had sent her to the Scripture Transmission Hall, he had to straighten her out.
Thus, after dealing with Jun Wen, he ordered Feng Xi to stand.
“Feng Xi, although you have made great contributions to the sect recently, the Scripture Transmission Hall recognizes only elders who impart knowledge and disciples who receive it. There are no so-called heroes here.
“You must therefore remember the rules of the Scripture Transmission Hall. Any violation will be punished severely. Do you understand?”
Feng Xi put on an obedient expression. “I understand.”
Elder Duanmu was very satisfied. This girl was far better than that reckless fool, Jun Wen.
He told her to sit down.
There were meditation cushions on the ground, and everyone sat cross-legged on the floor.

“Today’s lesson will focus primarily on spiritual energy.
“When Heaven and Earth first came into being, spiritual energy and demonic energy emerged as well. Spiritual energy rose while demonic energy sank, and thus Heaven and Earth were formed.”
Feng Xi frowned slightly. This was different from what the Little Black Ball had told her!
However, she had no intention of voicing her doubts.
For one thing, she had no evidence and would not be able to convince anyone. For another, openly questioning Elder Duanmu would only put him in an awkward position.
But Jun Wen, that hopeless idiot, did exactly that.
“Elder Duanmu, I’ve heard that when Heaven and Earth first opened, there was only primordial chaos, which later divided into spiritual energy and demonic energy. Could you have made a mistake?”
Feng Xi: “…”
Elder Duanmu had never liked Jun Wen’s carefree, irreverent manner. Assuming that he was causing trouble again, he roared, “Jun Wen! You really are incorrigible!
“If you continue spouting nonsense, I’ll send you to the Ten Thousand Swords Cave!”
Jun Wen wore an indignant expression. “You’re the one who made a mistake. Am I not allowed to point it out? Aren’t you misleading your students?”
Elder Duanmu was practically about to explode with rage.
“You have openly disrupted the order of the classroom. I sentence you to three days of reflection in the Ten Thousand Swords Cave! Get out! Go to the Ten Thousand Swords Cave immediately!”
Jun Wen gave a cold snort and turned to leave.
Feng Xi was utterly stunned!
But she quickly realized that Jun Wen had probably done it on purpose.
He did not want to attend classes at the Scripture Transmission Hall, yet he could not disobey Xiao Baidao’s orders, so he had come up with this trick.
Once he emerged from the Ten Thousand Swords Cave, he probably would not have to attend class anymore.
He already had the perfect excuse: he did not want to anger the elders again.
Feng Xi could not decide whether to praise Jun Wen for his cleverness or curse him for his stupidity. She simply continued listening to the lecture with rapt attention.
Even if Elder Duanmu’s explanation was incorrect, it was not his personal opinion but the prevailing belief of the present age. There was still some benefit in listening.
Otherwise, she might accidentally reveal something amiss when speaking with others in the future.
Elder Duanmu took a moment to calm himself before continuing his explanation of spiritual energy.
Soon, he began discussing spiritual-energy techniques.

“The power of a spiritual technique depends to a great extent on the speed at which a cultivator forms hand seals. If the seals are formed quickly enough, even the most ordinary Flame Technique can unleash tremendous power…”
Elder Duanmu continued droning on for quite some time before suddenly saying, “Feng Xi, come up here. I’ll use you as an example to explain the formation of hand seals.”
He had chosen Feng Xi mainly because he believed her seal-forming speed would certainly be very slow, making her the perfect negative example.
Feng Xi obediently hurried over to Elder Duanmu and even bowed to him.
Elder Duanmu’s impression of her improved further. He thought to himself that such an obedient and sensible disciple absolutely could not be led astray by Jun Wen!
He would have to remind her of that after class.
With that thought in mind, he said, “Feng Xi, begin forming the seals for the Flame Technique and let everyone observe.”
Feng Xi obediently nodded and was just about to form the seals when the three spiritual roots in her dantian suddenly began fighting for reasons unknown.
Seeing that Feng Xi had yet to move, Elder Duanmu urged her, “Feng Xi, form the seals quickly!”
Feng Xi was feeling irritable and restless. She thought that she would hurry through the seals, return to her seat, and meditate to regulate her breathing. Thus, she immediately began forming them.
But the instant she started, the spiritual energy in her meridians suddenly surged!
Boom!
A huge mass of flame burst forth and slammed straight into Elder Duanmu’s aged face.
Under normal circumstances, Elder Duanmu would have been able to dodge. But he had been caught off guard, and he was standing far too close to Feng Xi. Although he managed to turn his head aside, his beard caught fire!
By the time the flames went out, Elder Duanmu’s original two-foot-long beard had been reduced to less than an inch!
Everyone in the Profound Heaven Sect knew that Elder Duanmu valued his beard above all else. He groomed it meticulously every day and even kept every fallen hair in a jade box.
Feng Xi had truly caused a catastrophe this time!
But she was currently so overstuffed with spiritual energy that she felt ready to burst. She could not spare much attention for the matter and merely hastily said that she had not done it on purpose.
Elder Duanmu was so furious that even his hair stood on end!
“Good! Very good!
“You really are siblings from the same master!
“One of you openly disrupts the order of the classroom, while the other burns off this old man’s beard!
“You’re going to the Ten Thousand Swords Cave as well. Three days of reflection!”
