Chapter 4: As You Can See, He Cheated
Tang Yuan felt a pang of conscience. "How about we all go grab a meal later?"
Chen Meng’s face lit up with surprise. "Your husband is actually letting you go out? When we spoke on the phone last time, didn't you say you were never going to work again?"
Being hit where it hurt, Tang Yuan felt a bit embarrassed. She couldn't very well air the dirty laundry of her marriage for everyone to see. The upper crust valued decorum above all else; family scandals were never to be made public. That was the rule the Tang family had drilled into her.
She forced a smile. "I can't just stay home forever. What was his name again?"
Such a promising talent, yet he had been left to wither here for two years. Before Chen Meng could answer, the man himself spoke up.
"Fu Yansheng."
He looked at her as he uttered the name, then quickly looked away.
Tang Yuan curled her lips into a faint smile. "Right, okay. I’ve got it."
Chen Meng whispered, "What is wrong with you? Didn't you pick him up yourself back then? You didn't even remember his name?"
Tang Yuan felt awkward; she truly hadn't remembered. For the past few years, she had been too preoccupied with everything concerning Shen Zhou, constantly focusing on how to take care of him, that she hadn't paid any attention to anyone else.
She took a deep breath, her smile remaining fixed. "Mengmeng, can we order takeout at your place later?"
Chen Meng paused for a few seconds before nodding. "My place is very small. You’re used to the life of a wealthy socialite; I hope you won’t mind."
Chen Meng was blunt, with no intention of mocking her, but Tang Yuan realized that after two years of isolation, she had truly become disconnected from society.
As they walked outside, Tang Yuan asked, "Was it Yansheng's idea to turn this place into a boxing gym?"
"Yes. Yansheng doesn't like going out much, and since the top floor is our territory, we just set up a boxing gym. They’re young, after all, and full of energy."
The man walked beside her, casually pulling on a cap. Though he remained silent, his striking appearance was impossible to ignore.
They got into Tang Yuan's car. Chen Meng opened the front passenger door and gestured for Fu Yansheng to get in. Fu Yansheng hesitated, glanced at Tang Yuan, and stood still.
Tang Yuan smiled. "Go ahead and get in. I imagine we’ll be seeing more of each other from now on."
He lowered his lashes and climbed inside without a word.
In the past, only Shen Zhou had ever sat in Tang Yuan's passenger seat. Almost by instinct, she leaned over to fasten his seatbelt. He went rigid, his fingertips curling at his sides, and he turned his head to look out the window in silence.
Only after she had finished did Tang Yuan realize what she had done. This wasn't Shen Zhou; he didn't need her to look after him. She pulled back and set the navigation for Chen Meng’s home.
Chen Meng was quite lively, asking, "Have you seen any of the dramas Yansheng has filmed? He’s done quite a few over the past two years. Although he wasn't the lead, he’s gained some traction. Our studio relies entirely on him."
Tang Yuan felt even more ashamed. If she had known the studio had such a talent, she should have introduced him to a few directors. Moreover, since getting married, she had completely tuned out the entertainment industry.
The man beside her kept his head lowered. Hearing no response from Tang Yuan, he knew she hadn't watched them.
Chen Meng let out an exaggerated cry. "My goodness, you haven't been watching movies or dramas at all? Yuanyuan, didn't you study this in college? Why did you give it all up after marriage? Your husband must love you so much to make you sacrifice the thing you love most."
Tang Yuan gripped the steering wheel tightly, feeling truly helpless.
She was filled with bitterness, yet didn't know how to voice it. As the car stopped at a red light, she was just about to change the subject when another car pulled up beside hers.
Through the half-lowered window sat her aristocratic husband and that little "white lotus" of his. The woman was sitting on his lap, looking up at him while insistently trying to kiss his throat. He laughed as he dodged her, his eyes filled with indulgence.
Tang Yuan saw it all, of course. She withdrew her gaze, suppressing the dull ache in her chest. Shen Zhou was always serious about his work and never let anyone distract him. She hadn't expected him to be flirting in the car like this on his way to a meeting.
Chen Meng took a look and clicked her tongue. "That car costs at least twenty million. They’re certainly rich, and they’re a handsome pair, truly. But why do I feel like the man looks a bit familiar?"
The light turned green, and Tang Yuan stepped on the gas.
Chen Meng realized it a moment later. "Yuanyuan, that looks like... your husband, doesn't it?"
Tang Yuan exhaled, feeling a strange sense of relief—at least she didn't have to keep up the pretense anymore. "Yes. As you can see, he’s cheating."
Chen Meng offered an "oh," likely feeling awkward. "When did you find out?"
As she asked, the car pulled up in front of her rental apartment.
"Last night. A kind person sent me a text message."
Fu Yansheng, who had been about to open the door, paused for a moment before silently pressing the unlock button.
