They had attended the banquet yesterday as well, and at the time, she had thought the young woman quite sharp. She never expected that this Dr. Sang would turn out to be the long-lost daughter the Bai family had recently recovered.

Mrs. Qian’s smile grew even warmer. "What a coincidence this is."

She then asked, "Would you like to come in and sit for a while?"

Bai Qi replied with a polished smile, "Perhaps next time. I only brought Yezi here today and haven't made any preparations, so I won't go in and impose."

Mrs. Qian frowned. "But it’s so boring for you out here. Why don't you head back first? I’ll have the driver take Dr. Sang home later. Rest assured, I will make sure she gets home safely."

Sang Ye also chimed in, "You should go back first. I’m over twenty; I won't get lost."

Bai Qi insisted, "That won’t do. I promised them I would ensure you get home safely."

Seeing that he could not be persuaded, she had to leave him waiting outside.

As Sang Ye walked inside with Mrs. Qian, the latter remarked, "I took a real liking to you yesterday. I even told Old Qian that if our daughter had half your capability, we wouldn't be so worried. Since we have such a connection today, I like you even more."

Sang Ye gave a light chuckle. "It’s merely a necessity of life. Miss Qian is very fortunate to have parents like you to look after her."

Mrs. Qian said softly, "My child, your future is now paved with golden opportunities."

Sang Ye smiled. "I’ll take your word for it."

Upon entering the living room, Wangcai was found locked in a cage, its limbs bound, and it was even wearing a muzzle—partly to prevent it from biting others, and partly to keep it from harming itself.

Wangcai was a Labrador.

Sang Ye crouched down to meet the dog’s gaze, but Wangcai ignored her, its eyes devoid of any spark.

As expected.

Sang Ye turned and asked, "Mrs. Qian, may I have a moment alone with it?"

Mrs. Qian hesitated for two seconds before nodding. "But please, don't let it out. I'm afraid it might hurt you."

"It’s fine."

Hearing this, Mrs. Qian had the two people guarding the dog step outside as well.

Once everyone had left, Sang Ye said softly, "Your name is Wangcai, right? I’m Sang Ye, the doctor your owners brought to treat you."

Wangcai lay there, motionless and indifferent to Sang Ye’s words, as if nothing could pique its interest and it simply wanted to die in silence.

Sang Ye said patiently, "I know you can hear me, and I can understand you. You can tell me what you want or what you’re trying to do. You don't want to die with regrets, do you? You went to such lengths before instead of just ending it; isn't it because you had a purpose? Tell me, and perhaps I can help."

Upon hearing this, Wangcai, who had been lying there in a state of hopelessness, suddenly sprang to its feet.

"Woooo..."

Sang Ye then remembered the muzzle; its mouth couldn't close, and it couldn't speak.

She put on thick gloves and reached out to remove the muzzle.

Wangcai asked, unable to believe it, "You can really understand what I’m saying?"

"Yes."

That single, simple word from Sang Ye reignited hope in Wangcai, and a glimmer of light appeared in its eyes. "Can you make them bring Xiaobai back?"

Sang Ye paused. "Xiaobai?"

Wangcai nodded. "Yes, a white Teddy. She’s my girlfriend."

Sang Ye was stunned.

Taken aback, she asked incredulously, "A white Teddy is your girlfriend?"

Wangcai slumped back down, looking dejected again. "Yes! She’s beautiful and has such a sweet voice, but the little master in the house took Xiaobai away."

Sang Ye was silent for a moment. "I will relay this to your owners."

Mrs. Qian had been glancing inside every now and then, clearly worried, but after a short while, she saw Wangcai stand up. Then, she noticed its tail wagging, and it seemed to be in quite a good mood.

Seeing this, Mrs. Qian breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed this Dr. Sang truly was skilled; at the very least, she had managed to lift Wangcai’s spirits.

After a while, Sang Ye emerged.

Mrs. Qian hurried to meet her. "Dr. Sang, how is my Wangcai? What exactly is the cause of this?"

Sang Ye asked, "Mrs. Qian, did you have a Teddy named Xiaobai at home?"

Mrs. Qian was taken aback. "What does that have to do with Wangcai's illness?"

Sang Ye pursed her lips. "That Teddy named Xiaobai is Wangcai’s girlfriend."

The absurdity of this statement left Mrs. Qian speechless.

Sang Ye continued, "Think about it carefully. Did Wangcai start like this only after Xiaobai left? It’s suffering from depression caused by lovesickness. On top of that, it was in its mating season at the time. You tore the little couple apart, and because it couldn't be healed, it eventually developed the desire to end its life."

Mrs. Qian was shocked. "You mean to say, Wangcai is like this because we gave Xiaobai away?"

She had always assumed Wangcai was ill, which was why it wouldn't eat or drink. In reality, it had been on a hunger strike, trying to get them to bring Xiaobai back. Because they hadn't understood its intentions, the hunger strike had escalated into true depression, reaching the point of suicide.

Sang Ye nodded. "That should be it. You could try bringing that Teddy named Xiaobai back."

Mrs. Qian thought back and realized it was indeed after that time that the dog stopped eating. She immediately went to make a phone call.

Her young niece had visited a while ago, taken a liking to Xiaobai, and brought her home. Who would have thought it would lead to such a mess?

Ever since Wangcai had come to their home and been given its name, their business had flourished. Lately, with Wangcai sick, business had also taken a hit. It was just a dog, and if her niece liked it, she could just buy her a few more, but there was only one Wangcai.

Her niece lived nearby, and within half an hour, the dog was returned.

Only then did they find out that Xiaobai had also been refusing to eat and drink since she arrived.

Sang Ye carried Xiaobai inside and placed her in the cage with Wangcai. "I’ve brought Xiaobai back for you."

Everyone then watched as the Labrador and the small white Teddy sniffed each other and then snuggled together, their tails wagging so fast they were practically a blur.

Watching Wangcai, whose mental state had clearly improved, Sang Ye said, "Mrs. Qian, do you have any probiotics at home? Feed them some probiotics mixed with warm water first. If not, just warm water is fine. Then, slowly introduce some easy-to-digest food. If they are eating normally by tomorrow, there shouldn't be any issues."

Mrs. Qian said with emotion, "Thank you, thank you so much."

Sang Ye simply replied, "It was my duty. I’ll be heading back now; just give me a call if anything else comes up."

Mrs. Qian looked at the two dogs of vastly different sizes, now inseparable. She pulled out her phone, opened the interface, and smiled at Sang Ye. "Let’s add each other on WeChat. How much do I owe you? Also, I’d like to prepay for a year of grooming and bathing for both of them. Let me calculate... actually, I’ll just deposit one hundred thousand. They’ll need fish oil, vitamins, and the like."

"Thank you so much for tonight. If it weren't for you, I would have truly torn Wangcai and Xiaobai apart."
